小case,大用途

　　case虽然是个简单英文单词,但在汉语口语中却很流行――小case!说实话,单独使用的case在英语中不是一个很常用的词,在高考中也不是一个常考的词,但是,非常奇怪,由它构成的几个惯用短语,却个个都很重要,个个都经常考。本文就帮同学们对case的几个重要短语的用法作一归纳――让它们在你面前统统变成小case!
　　
　　一、in any case
　　
　　该短语的意思是“无论如何”“不管怎样”。如:
　　In any case you must arrive there on time. 无论如何你必须按时到达那里。
　　It may rain tomorrow,but we are going home in any case. 明天可能下雨,但不管怎样,我们打算回家去。
　　
　　二、in case
　　
　　这是所有含case的短语中最为重要的一个,也是最为常考的一个。它有两个用法:
　　1. 起副词作用,其意为“以防万一”。如:
　　You had better carry some money in case. 你最好带些钱,以防万一。
　　It may rain;you’d better take an umbrella in case. 可能下雨――你最好带把伞,以防万一。
　　2. 起连词作用,用于引导条件状语从句和目的状语从句。
　　(1) 引导条件状语从句,意为“假使”“如果”。如:
　　In case he comes,let me know. 如果他来的话,告诉我一声。
　　In case they’re late,we can always sit in the bar. 要是他们来晚了,我们总可以在酒吧里坐一坐。
　　这类从句的谓语除通常使用陈述语气外,有时也可使用“(should+)动词原形”这样的虚拟语气。如:
　　I bought the car at once in case he changed [should change] his mind. 我马上买下那辆汽车,以免他变卦。
　　(2) 引导目的状语从句,意为“以防”“免得”。如:
　　Be quiet in case you wake the baby. 轻点儿,别吵醒婴儿。
　　Write the telephone number down in case you forget. 把电话号码写下来以免忘了。
　　
　　三、in case of
　　
　　这是一个非常有用的介词,其重要性可能仅次于in case。它的意思是“如果”“万一”“以防”。如:
　　The wall was built along the river in case of floods. 沿河筑了防护墙以防洪水。
　　In case of fire,walk quickly to the nearest door. 如果失火,就赶快朝最近的门跑。
　　In case of emergency,break the glass and press the button. 遇到紧急情况时,击碎玻璃罩并摁下按钮。
　　
　　四、in no case
　　
　　这也是一个常用短语,其意为“绝不”“无论如何不”。如:
　　I will reveal your secret in no case. 我绝不会泄漏你的秘密。
　　由于本身含有否定意义,所以当它置于句首时,其后要用倒装语序。如:
　　In no case should you panic. 千万不要惊慌。
　　In no case should you give up. 你绝不能放弃。
　　
　　五、in that (this) case
　　
　　其意为“既然那样(这样)”“在那种(这种)情况下”“如果是那样(这样)的话”。如:
　　In that case you’ll have to clear yourself. 如果是那样,你只得自行辩白了。
　　In that case,I have no more to say. 要是那样,我就没什么可说的了。
　　We cannot assume anything in this case. 在这种情形下我们无法作任何揣测。
　　注意以下这类引导定语从句的情形――如果高考就此命题,对许多同学来说肯定是个“难题”:
　　He may be busy,in which case I’ll call later. 他可能忙,倘若如此,我以后再来拜访。
　　She may be late,in which case we ought to wait for her. 她可能迟到,因此我们应该等她。
　　I may have to work late,in which case I’ll telephone. 我可能得晚点下班,那样我会打电话的。
　　请看下面的两道题:
　　1. My father may have to go into hospital, I won’t be going on holiday.
　　A. in which case
　　B. in that case
　　C. in this case
　　D. in case of
　　2. Sometimes feta is very salty, no salt needs to be added.
　　A. in which case
　　B. in that case
　　C. in this case
　　D. in case of
　　第1题答案选A。句意为:我父亲可能需要住院,如果那样我就不去度假了。第2题答案选A。句意为:有时羊奶干酪很咸,如果这样的话,就不必加盐了。注意,要是空格前有个连词and,那么就不能选A了,而应选B或C。
